PMC standing committee chairman Shreenath Bhimale said that eight more gardens will be designed and built soon, taking the total count in the city to 224.
“After Bengaluru, Pune is known for its public gardens,” he said.
Bhimale also proposed the development of a “Miracle Garden” in the city on the lines of Dubai’s, stating that it could emerge as a major tourist attraction.
Ashok Ghorpade, head, PMC garden department, said work on the new eight gardens is already underway. “We will identify a location and reservation for the proposed ‘Miracle Garden’,” he said.
He said two gardens will be developed in Dhanori, Vadgaonsheri and one each at other selected places.
Bhimale said the civic body also plans to plant 50 trees across hills and open spaces in the city.
The garden department has also prepared a master plan for the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park at Katraj that includes bringing in a wider range of animals, such as giraffes and anacondas, and developing an entrance plaza at the zoo.
