Six of Soren family named in executive committee of JMM

Three incumbent ministers, including Champai Soren, Mithliesh Thakur, and Jib Majhi, have been appointed as vice president, general secretary, and secretary, respectively. However, what stands out is the inclusion of six members of party president Shibu Soren’s family on the list.

Over eighteen months after dissolving its central executive committee in December 2021, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Monday announced its new set of office bearers and members of the central executive, with six members of the Shibu Soren family on the list.

“A majority of the names included in the list comprises the most senior leaders, the party legislators, and the two parliamentarians. The list strikes a balance between experience and youth, with eight vice presidents, 10 general secretaries, and seven secretaries,” said a senior party leader on Monday.

Three incumbent ministers, including Champai Soren, Mithliesh Thakur, and Jib Majhi, have been appointed as vice president, general secretary, and secretary, respectively. At least 11 other party legislators have secured a spot either as an office bearer or on the list of 30 executive members, the leader said.

However, what stands out is the inclusion of six members of party president Shibu Soren’s family on the list.

Besides the party patriarch, chief minister Hemant Soren serves as the working president. Shibu Soren’s wife, Rupi Soren, has been named among the eight vice presidents. Sita Soren, the elder sister-in-law of the chief minister, has been appointed as one of the ten general secretaries.

“This is nothing new. Most have held political posts in the party in the past as well. Basant Soren was the party’s youth wing president until now. The only new entrant to the central executive is his sister, Anjali Soren. She has been the president of the party’s Odisha unit for a long time,” a party leader said.

Meanwhile, general secretary Vinod Pandey has been given the additional charge of treasurer and named as one of the six spokespersons of the party.
