Steve Smith’s unbeaten 92 saw Australia end Day 2 of the Perth Test at 203/3 in a firm response to England’s first innings. Earlier, England’s lower middle order and tailend failed to sustain the momentum generated by centuries from Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow as they lost their last six wickets for just 35 runs to end their first innings at a total of 403. Resuming from their overnight total of 305/4, England looked solid early on Day 2 as Malan and Bairstow added some quick runs on the board. However, things changed soon after Malan’s dismissal and the rest of the English wickets fell like a pack of cards. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the Australian bowlers with figures of 4/91.
