The hosts rode on Steve Smith’s 239 and Mitchell Marsh’s 181 to take a first innings lead of 259 runs as they declared at 662/9. After losing three early wickets on Sunday, Australia were helped by Tim Paine and Pat Cummins to posting the mammoth total. In response, England lost openers Mark Stoneman and Alastair Cook to deliveries from Josh Hazlewood, while Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc removed Joe Root and James Vince, respectively.
