It was just the fourth over after lunch and 30th overall when Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer decided to have eight fielders around the batsman, a field setting that would delight any spinner.
But this time the bowler in action was Mumbai and India's pace spearhead Zaheer Khan and the choice of fielding positions was more a hopeful attempt to get a breakthrough on the Kandheri ground pitch that was placid and slow.
The move yielded no result as openers Bhushan Chauhan (87 not out) and Chirag Pathak (116) easily negotiated Zaheer's four over spell and stitched their second double century stand together to put Saurashtra in command.
Saurashtra ended the day on 244 for 2 with Chauhan and Cheteshwar Pujara (7) at the crease.
Zaheer, keen to prove his fitness to the selectors is playing in his second Ranji game. His effort on Tuesday would have dispelled any doubts about whether he has completely recovered after he broke down on the first day of the Lord's Test in July.
