Dehradun will house the laboratory -- the first such facility in the state. At present, the hill state has only one cyber police station in the state capital while dedicated cyber cells are being put in place across all the 13 districts.

According to top police officials, the lab will help in expediting resolution of cyber-based crime cases, which includes a wide range of criminal activities carried out through computer or the internet like hacking, phishing, ATM and bank related cyber frauds and crimes though the social media.

The union home ministry has allocated a budget of 1.5 crore for the purchase of the equipment required for setting up the lab.

“Requisite equipments are being procured for the lab, which will help us in cracking cases of cyber crimes more swiftly,” said Ridhim Aggarwal, senior superintendent of police (Special Task Force). Aggarwal is also the in-charge of the cyber crime police station.

Till now, the cyber police of Uttarakhand used to take help from cyber forensic labs in Delhi and Chandigarh for forensic analysis of digital evidence.
