The votes are in. Just a week before the Delhi University (DU) college cut-offs are due, students aspiring to study in colleges affiliated to the prestigious university have made their choices clear in a survey on ‘College you’d love to study in,’ conducted online by HT Education on its website

More than 500 students who have cleared their Class 12 Boards from Delhi schools like Salwan, Kendriya Vidyalaya Arjangarh, DPS Mathura Road, Apeejay School Noida and other cities of Dehradun, Bathinda, Bhilai – even Chennai and Kolkata – clicked on their preferred colleges, pushing Hindu College up to the first position with a percentage of 41.86. Hansraj and St Stephen’s together were voted as the number two colleges in the city, with Shri Ram College of Commerce taking up the third position. Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Ramjas College came in together at number four, while Kirori Mal College took up the fifth position. Miranda House was ranked sixth, followed by Sri Venkateswara College; Gargi College; College of Art and Jesus and Mary College were at seventh, eighth and nine (both) positions, respectively. Delhi College of Arts and Commerce was ranked at number 10.
Commerce was the preferred subject for 37.34% survey participants, followed by arts (33.43%) and science (24.30%). On their preferred colleges, 53.31% of the students said quality faculty was very important. Facilities like libraries and laboratories were also ranked second in the order of importance by 49.69% students. The popularity of a college also counted for 26.2%students while ‘a hip and cool crowd’ was preferred by 23.79% students. Most of them did not seem too bothered about what they would be served in the college canteen,

About 59.63% students said they aspired to join their favourite college because it had been at the top of the rankings chart. The quality of programmes (especially disciplines taught in a college) mattered to those who wanted to take up programmes in a particular discipline.

The highest priority (51%) was given to quality of programmes in a college. Placements and good faculty were the next preferences at 47.89% and 46.38%, respectively. About 20.48% said a good library was a must, followed by a beautiful campus, good hostels etc.
