Indian National Congress's V. Muniyappa won the election by upstaging Janata Dal (Secular)'s B.N. Ravikumar by a margin of 9,709 votes.

The top two candidates split 84.3% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's V. Muniyappa got a total of 76,240 votes, while Janata Dal (Secular)'s B.N. Ravikumar secured 66,531 votes. Independent candidate Anjinappa (PUTTU) secured 10,986 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 45.0%, 39.3% and 6.5% respectively.
