In 2017, 3 candidates were contesting for Sundernagar assembly constituency seat. Sundernagar was one of 44 seats won by the Bharatiya Janta Party. Bharatiya Janta Party's Rakesh Kumar won the election by defeating Indian National Congress's Sohan Lal by a margin of 9,263 votes.

98.9% of the total votes were casted to top two candidates. Bharatiya Janta Party's Rakesh Kumar got a total of 32,545 votes, while Indian National Congress's Sohan Lal got 23,282 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate Dharam Singh grabbed 624 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties secured 57.7%, 41.2% and 1.1% respectively.
