Thirty five year old Garry Birring, an MBA from Oxford University and a resident of Ludhiana won the Amloh assembly constituency in Punjab with a massive 52,648 votes. He was contesting on an Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) ticket.
A debutante in the political space, Gurinder Singh Garry Birring defeated his nearest competitor Shiromani Akali Dal’s Gurpreet Singh Raju Khanna by a wide margin of 24,663 votes. The SAD candidate garnered only about half the number of votes that Birring raked in--- polling just about 28,129 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kanwarveer Singh Tohra came in a distant third with 9,449 votes.
In what was an out and out Aam Aadmi Party victory in Punjab, with the party bagging 92 of the 117 seats in the state assembly, Birring stood out with a record win specially since he is a first timer and cannot flaunt a lot of political experience.

Back in 2020, when the farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh were protesting against the three controversial farm laws framed by the Centre, which have since been repealed, Birring stepped in to do his bit. He was part of a group along with seven others that ran a makeshift school and library for the children of the agitating farmers at the Singhu border. They educated the children, who were camping in the area along with their parents and also trained them in various art forms. They set up a library and provided books free of cost to the protesting farmers and their children.

{{/usCountry}}Birring’s constituency Amloh falls under Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district. In 2017, the Amloh assembly seat had 1,35,524 registered voters and was one of the 77 seats won by the Congress. It was a close contest with Congress’s Randeep Singh winning the election defeating Shiromani Akali Dal’s Gurpreet Singh Raju Khanna by a margin of just 3,946 votes. Back then, the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate-- Gurpreet Singh Bhatti had made it to the third spot with 30,573 votes.
