Imagine being paid to talk. That’s exactly what Delhiite Sunanda Wong, 22, and Mumbaikar Gaelyn Mendonca, 21 — winners of the recently concluded MTV VJ hunt — have the opportunity to do.
Has life changed after winning the show?
Sunanda Wong: Life has gone from black and white to technicolour! I missed the Delhi auditions, and went all the way to Bangalore for them.
Gaelyn Mendonca: It’s been a roller coaster ride. When I came for the auditions, the gates had already closed. It was only after repeated requests that I managed to get in.
Why VJ-ing?
SW: I don’t know if I can do anything else.
GM: I love talking, so to get paid for doing that is absolutely amazing.
VJs these days are not as popular as they were in the past...
SW: I agree. But Gaelyn and I will make sure we prove you wrong. We want to connect with as many people as possible.
GM: During that time, Vjing was a novelty. And the VJs were someone people looked up to. Now it’s all about how well you connect with your viewers.
What is the toughest part about being a VJ?
SW: Not being paid enough. That has turned me into a kleptomaniac.
GM: You just have to be ready for erratic timings, otherwise there’s no downside to it.
