Madhuri Dixit, one of Bollywood's most enviable beauties, who impressed the audience with her charisma, dance and acting skills, turns 43 today.
Madhuri, who is now settled in the United States after marriage, was born in 1967 in Mumbai. She dominated Hindi cinema as a leading actress throughout the late 1980s and the 1990s. Trained as a Kathak dancer, in the Indian classical tradition she made a humble beginning in the Hindi film industry with the Rajshris in the film Abodh. Her first major role was in Tezaab in 1988. She then went on to star in the hit films Ram Lakhan, Parinda, Dil, Beta, Khalnayak, Saajan, Dil To Pagal Hai and the biggest blockbuster in Bollywood Hum Aapke Hain Kaun!.
In 2002, she starred in Devdas, which was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year a film named after her, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon was released in which a woman (played by Antara Mali) aspires to become the new Madhuri Dixit by trying her luck in the Bollywood industry.
Madhuri is not only known for her acting skills, but for her dancing skills as well. Her dance sequences, accompanying famous Bollywood songs such as Ek Do Teen (from Tezaab), Bada Dukh Deenha (from Ram Lakhan), Dhak Dhak (from Beta), Chane Ke Khet Mein (from Anjaam), Choli Ke Peechhe (from Khalnayak), Akhiyan Milaun (from Raja), Piya Ghar Aya (from Yaarana), Key Sera (from Pukar), Maar Daala (from Devdas), among others, have received abundant critical acclaim.

Madhuri has been the muse for the famous Indian painter MF Hussain who considers her the epitome of the Indian woman. She also appeared in his film Gaja Gamini which was intended as a tribute to Dixit's talent and beauty. In 2008, she was awarded the Padma Shri.
