Sonam Kapoor’s ethnic woes

Actor Sonam Kapoor, 25, knows the A to Z of the western fashion trends, and her gorgeous looks in the movie Aisha is a proof of that. However, when it comes to flaunting a traditional churidaar or a sari, the Bollywood’s fashion icon utterly disappoints the media and her fans.

She’s smart, trendy and makes heads turn with Valentino and John Galliano’s creations. Actor Sonam Kapoor, 25, knows the A to Z of the western fashion trends, and her gorgeous looks in the movie Aisha is a proof of that. However, when it comes to flaunting a traditional churidaar or a sari, the Bollywood’s fashion icon utterly disappoints the media and her fans.

The slim-built actor, who doesn’t really possess a curvaceous body like most of our tinsel town divas such as Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra, isn’t able to do much justice to Indian clothes. During most of her recent public outings, whenever the Kapoor babe sported an Indian trend, she has got it all wrong for her style and body type. Designer Urvashi Kaur says, “May be Sonam should stick to Indo-western looks as with her thin frame she fails to create that oomph in a sari.” We spoke to some experts to understand Kapoor’s ethnic style, which has been going wrong frequently.Unflattering poise

Sonam Kapoor was seen in this black and white printed sari at a store launch in Mumbai a few months back. Kapoor tied the sari in a way that her figure looks too straight. The curves that enhance the looks in a sari are horribly missing in this look.



Expert speak: Designer Anjalee Kapoor says, "She should go for a voluminous sari as her body structure doesn’t look good in a very light drape. Those earrings are certainly not going with the sari, instead she should have worn a nice neck piece." A black waistcoat and the sari palla draped like a stole would have looked better here. The dishevelled hairstyle could have also helped. Right now it seems as if Sonam has really tried hard to put this look together. Here she’s looking very lean and the sari is doing nothing to make her look sexy and appealing."

Slap-dash mix
Sonam made another appearance in a traditional garara style salwar kurta with embroidery on it at a wedding reception. The look stands as a great example of what the wrong selection of outfit can do to you. The careless mix of patterns has actually ruined her look.

Expert speak: “There’s a mis-match between the hairstyle, jewellery and the outfit Sonam is wearing. These wide-legged trousers paired with a heavy dupatta and an ill-fitted kameez is not meant for her age. There’s nothing new she has tried with her make-up; it’s a very old-styled look. Instead, she should have gone for a fitted anarkali suit with better colour combination,” says designer Abdul Halder.

Anarkali gone awry
The actor got the fad of the moment Anarkali look too wrong at a promotion of her film recently. While a trailing long anarkali would have looked great in a more fitted style, this outfit is making her look older than her age, thanks to the cuts that are neither sharp nor structured.

Expert speak: Designer Urvashi Kaur says, “There’s something wrong with her outfit selection when it comes to ethnic wear. Instead of going for the typical Indian wear, she should go for the Indo-western look. She’s tall and to top that she’s wearing such a long kameez which is further adding to her height. She should wear a kameez that’s just below her knees. She should also avoid going for a traditional make-up and earrings, and try out something more edgy. Glossy lips or dramatic eyes will add to her looks.”
