Delhi-based designer Rinku Sobti.
The designer, who has been working with the macramé technique for a long time now, aims to create employment, promote artisans, and increase awareness about handcrafted and handwoven fabrics among today’s youth. “Crochet adds a touch of individuality, and hence, is received well as a statement trend. Anything that makes the millennial feel unique and unconventional echoes their taste,” she says.
So, how well can crochet fit into one’s wardrobe today? “Crochet lace has been used to make outfits and clothing since the 19th century. Over the years, it has become even more elaborate, and is used for detailing. Crochet motifs and designs have been utilised by designers and high-street brands for years,” says celebrity stylist Aastha Sharma, adding that one can now find crochet in different forms of clothing such as dresses, jackets, cover-ups, shorts, and more. “Crochet clothing works best for holiday wear such as swimwear and beachwear, and to achieve a boho look,” she says.
