Karva Chauth: Women from Delhi’s fashion and art scene share their stories

We spoke to a few ladies from the city’s fashion and art fraternity to tell us their fondest memories of Karva Chauth.

Think Karva Chauth and images of women decked in full traditional glory, replete with sindoor and jingling bangles come to mind. That’s the beauty of women, who juggle different worlds at one time, and make it all look like a cakewalk. These women work hard, party harder and keep the fast — without making a fuss. We spoke to a few ladies from the city’s fashion and art fraternity to tell us their fondest memories from the day.

‘I’ve done the Karva Chauth pooja at fashion week’

Model Krishna Somani says, “Two years back, Karva Chauth coincided with the fashion week and we actually did the pooja at the venue. It’s mind over matter when you are fasting.” Krishna added that card games with family act as a distraction while they fast during Karva Chauth.

‘I got mugged on Karva Chauth!’

“A decade back, I had gone shopping for Karva Chauth. I bought earrings, an expensive lipstick and had the remaining cash on me. A motorcyclist snatched my bag! I was more worried about the lipstick than anything else, a brand which was really sought after,” laughed designer Reynu Taandon.

‘I (almost) ate during my fast’

Artist Ina Puri recounts her ‘close’ Karva Chauth encounter. “I am a Bengali, married to a Punjabi. My mother-in-law told me that they kept the fast and I was happy to keep it too. When my son was young, I was feeding him rice and fish, and by mistake, was about to put in my mouth (the way you show kids how to eat). I spat it out immediately!”

Fashion choreographer Aparna Bahl Bedi says because of her busy schedule, she has confused Karva Chauth dates. She says,“I had mixed the date of the celebrations a few years back. I woke up and had my normal dose of lemon water, realising later that it was Karva Chauth.”
