Road repair work derails traffic movement at Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon

On a day the city saw heavy traffic owing to frenzied shopping for Diwali, traffic movement went off the rails around Rajiv Chowk and exit 10 of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway because of the ongoing repair work on a 100-metre stretch of Chaudhary Bakhtawar Singh Road.

With landmarks and key roads such as the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, Medanta-the Medicity hospital, Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Civil Lines and Sohna Road in close proximity, the route is heavily accessed by commuters.

The stretch undergoing repair is situated opposite the new underpass that leads to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Those coming from the Gurgaon expressway and opting to take exit 10 towards Bakhtawar Chowk were the worst-affected, as the road width was reduced from three lanes to one due to the ongoing repair work.

Crammed for space, drivers battled to find their way out of the stretch during peak hours, as the backlog stretched to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and subsequently affected traffic towards Manesar and Jaipur as well.

Disgruntled with the chaos, several motorists chose not to enter the Chaudhary Bakhtawar Singh Road-Bakhtawar Chowk stretch and drove illegally on to the other side of the road, bringing traffic to a halt on that part of the stretch as well.

“Owing to Diwali shopping, most roads are already in a mess. I have no clue why the authorities chose to carry out road repair during this period,” Abhishek Dayal, a resident of Nirvana Country, said.

Authorities said that the road is being repaired ahead of Haryana Day on November 1, during which functions are organised at Tau Devi Lal stadium.

“This is a routine repair work ahead of Haryana Day celebration, as many dignitaries come to attend functions. The work will be completed within a week and normal traffic flow will be restored at the earliest,” an official of Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) said.
