The Directors Guild of America, celebrating its 80th year, asked its members to vote for the best directed movies since 1936. And now, they’ve revealed the top 80.

Here is the top 10
1. The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola 19722. Citizen Kane Orson Welles 19413. Lawrence of Arabia David Lean 19624. 2001: A Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick 19685. Casablanca Michael Curtiz 19426. The Godfather: Part II Francis Ford Coppola 19747. Apocalypse Now Francis Ford Coppola 19798. Schindler’s List Steven Spielberg 19939. Gone With the Wind Victor Fleming 193910. Goodfellas Martin Scorsese 1990
The most notable takeaway from this top 10 is that three Francis Ford Coppola films have been included. Each one deservedly so. Citizen Kane was named number one in the American Film Institute’s top 100 films of all time, but the directors have pushed it to number two in favour of Coppola’s crime epic.
While the list does a great job of including the most obvious choices, it doesn’t quite find room for some modern classics. There’s room for just one Coen Brothers movie (Fargo) and one by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood). Surprisingly, there’s no Christopher Nolan or Michael Mann film in the list. Directors with multiple films featured on the list include Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Staley Kubrick, Sergio Leone and James Cameron.
