The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, the culmination of a decade-long cinematic series that began with 2008’s Iron Man, was released online on Wednesday. The superhero extravaganza, along with its direct sequel, will close out Phase IV of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
The trailer sets off on an ominous tone, dreading the arrival of a villain to end all villains, Thanos (Josh Brolin). Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) sits on his knees, broken and defeated, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) has been crushed into a staircase with Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) looming over him. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) caresses Vision’s (Paul Bettany) face, who strangely is in a human form now. There is also Thor (Chris Hemsworth) looking out of his spaceship and Natasha Romanova (Scarlett Johansson) smiling at something at a distance.
Looming voices of different heroes in the background tell us why the Avengers were brought together: ‘to fight the battles that they never could.’ But their hopeful words are soon suppressed by the booming voice of Thanos: “In time, you will know what it’s like to lose. To feel so desperately that you are right and to fail all the same.”
Peter Parker (Tom Holland) watches his spider-sense tingle on a school bus as a huge rotating structure appears in the sky. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is seen with the tesseract he nicked from Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok, as if offering it to someone. We guess we know who when the big purple Thanos appears in the next frame. T’challa (Chadwick Boseman) warns people to evacuate the city and bring a shield for Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans), who now has longer hair and a thick beard. Tony brings out the Hulkbuster from the closet and giant aliens take over Earth, choking Spiderman and clawing at Black Panther’s face. One tries to remove the stone out of Vision’s head as he screams in agony, perhaps to adorn Thanos’ gauntlet. Everyone prepares for war and then runs for their life when Thanos unleashes his army on them as the epic Avengers theme plays heavy and loud.

Infinity War will reunite characters from several Marvel movies whose paths haven’t crossed yet. It’ll bring the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy together as they take on their most formidable foe yet, whose arrival has been teased in several films leading up to Infinity War. Finally armed with the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos can begin his ultimate plan for global domination.
“There will be two distinct periods. Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting,” Marvel boss Kevin Feige teased.
Feige termed the film “the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as started in May of 2008” with the release of the first Iron Man movie.
The film stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Brolin, and more. It is directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, who’ve directed the two previous Captain America movies, and is scheduled for a May 4, 2018 release.
