Christian Bale says he hasn’t watched The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy in which he played the Dark Knight. The film released in 2012 and earned over a billion dollars at the box office. But the film’s release was marked by tragedy when a lone gunman opened fire in a theatre in Aurora, Colorado, and killed 12 people, injuring 70 others.

Bale, in an interview to MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, said that although he wasn’t a big fan of superhero films, he had a particular reason to not watch The Dark Knight Rises. “Very sadly, I have not been able to watch that film since because of the whole tragedy of Aurora. I have not been able to sit down and see it without thinking of that. I’d love to be able to, one day,” he said.
In addition to not watching his own movie, Bale said he hasn’t seen Ben Affleck’s take on the Dark Knight either. “I have to confess I’m not a huge superhero film fan. People seem surprised at that, I don’t know why,” Bale said. “I’ve not seen any of the Avengers films or any of those films at all. I hear they’re very good, but I’m quite happy just hearing they’re very good.”
Ben Affleck has starred three times as Batman, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League. His tenure has been controversial, because of his frequently changing statements about his future as the character and the DC Extended Universe’s critical drubbing.
