Joy Mangano's mother has these words of wisdom for her daughter as the first trailer of director David O Russell's new film, Joy begins. Alas, that's not how it's going to pan out.

This is a trailer that plays out, for the most part, without any dialogue, no real indication of the plot, but manages to capture the essence of the film, and what looks to be another great performance by star Jennifer Lawrence.

Joy breaks free, starts planning and the rest, as they say, is history. Joy Mangano becomes an inventor and the head of a large business empire.

The trailer takes us through the ups and downs of her endeavours. As they official synopsis points out,

Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.

After collaborating with Russell for Silver Linings Playbook, for which she won an Oscar, and American Hustle, which earned her another nomination, Lawrence is on the fast-track to more Oscar attention.

Russell, too, seems to be creating a spiritually connected series of sorts. Joy shares style and tone with the director's last two films in a good way, perfectly balancing comedy and drama, and even though there aren't any of Russell's great lines to be heard here, we can be sure to expect an endless treasure trove of quotable goodies.

Joy opens Christmas day and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Viginia Madsen and Edgar Ramirez. It is written and directed by David O Russell from a story he co-wrote with Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids).
