After fans called out Marvel Studios for not including Danai Gurira’s name on Avengers: Endgame poster, a new version of the same was shared on Twitter on Friday.Updated: Mar 15, 2019 10:47 IST
Marvel Studios have shared a new, updated poster of their upcoming film, Avengers: Endgame after backlash from fans. Originally shared on Thursday evening with the second, full trailer for the film, the poster didn’t include Black Panther actor Danai Gurira’s name even though it featured her prominently.
“She should have been up there all this time. Check out the official Marvel Studios’ #AvengersEndgame poster. @DanaiGurira #WakandaForever,” Marvel wrote in a new tweet. Danai’s name is featured right after Karen Gillian’s and before Bradley Cooper’s special billing for voicing Rocket.
The decision to include Danai’s name came after fans took to social media to voice their disappointment. Several people were upset that the only black woman in the cast was not credited on the poster. “Black women always get the short end of the stick. Why isn’t @DanaiGurira’s name on here but everyone else’s is? Literally everyone else but her. Tf?! ,” wrote a fan. “Um... why is the ONLY person who appears on this poster that is NOT credited Danai Gurira? I’m pretty sure that needs rectifying quickly Marvel! Mainly because she deserves her name up there just as much as everyone else. And also, because Okoye is Queen,” wrote another. A fan also photoshopped the entire poster to replace every character’s face with Danai’s. Check out more reactions:
BLACK PANTHER star Danai Gurira is the only actor pictured whose name isn’t billed at the top. Her image is larger than some actors who do get that billing. The only one from the franchise’s best and most profitable movie, and yet? @MarvelStudios, this isn’t difficult. Fix this. https://t.co/22miymysgj— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) March 14, 2019
I totally get that there are a lot of names to slam onto this poster, but to include everyone else and leave out @DanaiGurira just feels rude. If she's important enough to put on the poster, then she's important enough to give a name credit. https://t.co/tgPTUi99pb— Laura Maz: A Hero for Hire (@Vamphlet) March 14, 2019
PUT DANAI GURIRA’S NAME ON THE POSTER YOU COWARDS!!!!! https://t.co/nl1XPQWnKe— HAUS OF POTATO (@rastamiller) March 14, 2019
she is the only black woman on that poster, the highest profile post-snappening wakandan, a firm fan favorite, and freaking actual DANAI GURIRA to boot. put some respect on her name, damn.— Bim Adewunmi (@bimadew) March 14, 2019
Danai played Dora Milaje warrior Okoye in Black Panther and then in Avengers: Infinity War. She is the only character from the Black Panther canon to have made it out alive of Infinity War. King T’challa perished after Thanos’ deadly finger snap and the whereabouts of his sister, princess Shuri are unknown. However, we do not see Okoye in the new trailer either.
The fresh new trailer has been viewed more than 26 million times in about half a day. Director duo of Russo Brothers dropped the trailer on social media as a surprise for the fans. It established that Iron Man/Tony Stark is back on Earth and that Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers has joined the team of superheroes as well.
The film releases on April 26.
