The first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the Pirates franchise is here - and against all odds, it looks great!
The Pirates franchise has been on a downward spiral after the first film that introduced the world to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. This is the character that arguably defines Depp’s career - which is saying something for an actor who’s made a career out of playing quirky oddballs.
And going by this short, almost 2-minute-long teaser, it looks like the franchise is going back to its roots. Just like the Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Men Tell No Tales appears to have struck the right balance between action, fantasy, humour and scares.

{{/usCountry}}And they seem to have finally found a match for Jack Sparrow: Captain Salazar, played chillingly by Javier Bardem. The trailer is designed to show him off, and he’s the star of the show - at least for the time being. It’s almost enough to make us forget that there’s no Johnny Depp in the trailer at all. Almost, but not quite.
This film has been a long time coming. We’ll hear more about the troubles on set as we inch closer to its release on May 26, 2017. It’s reportedly budgeted at a staggering $320 million - that’s more than Rs 2000 crore!
Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg and stars franchise newcomers Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario with vets Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom.
