The first theatrical trailer for the Emma Watson, Ethan Hawke-starrer Regression has been released. The psychological thriller comes from the genius mind of Alejandro Amenabar, director of gems like Abre los Ojos, Agora and The Others.Emma Watson plays a girl who accuses her father of committing an unspeakable crime, of which he has no recollection. A renowned psychiatrist (David Thewlis)is called in to help unravel the father’s repressed memories. Throw in Ethan Hawke’s grizzled detective and a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top and you get a great-looking thriller.

The trailer has a stylishly spooky tone. It focuses on some of the psychological aspects of memory, trauma and in an encouraging nod to film noir, also hints at a deep-rooted conspiracy and the emotional toil such cases take on the mind of a cop.The grey, damp environs of '90s Minnesota brings back to mind True Detective and its disturbing southern gothic noir. Horror/thrillers have a greater chance of working if the performers are committed, and all the major players seem to be invested in the story.
The film is another great example of Emma Watson’s excellent choices post her term as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series. She’s utilised the recognition she earned from that celebrated series into getting some really interesting films made. Her work in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Darren Aronofsky’s Noah showed us that she had hidden skills and great range.

Writer-director Amenabar was a trailblazer for Spanish horror and Regression looks like another feather in his cap. It is expected in theatres on August 28 in the US.
