The good news first: Sherlock is back. And now the bad one: His visit will be excruciatingly short (just a one-episode Christmas special) and we will be left bereft till he returns for a complete season. So, when will he return with an entire season? As Benedict Cumberbatch cheekily says in the teaser for Christmas special, "I myself don't know."
Sherlock -- the modern-day meta reboot of Arthur Conan Doyle's pipe-smoking detective - has gone back to its roots in this special episode. We see (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr Watson (Martin Freeman) back at 221 B Baker Street in the garb of a Victorian gentleman, riding a hansom.

There is snow falling and Watson has a luxuriant moustache. We, the audience, are happy but Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs) is not. Ironically, she echoes our thoughts when she tells Sherlock, "I do wish you'd let me know when you are coming home." Sherlock being Sherlock has just the perfect answer, "That's the thing with dismembered country squires, they are notoriously hard to schedule."
She is piqued with Watson too because she hardly gets to say anything in Watson's narration of Sherlock's exploits. "I am not a plot device," she announces.
Full of wit and some really smart writing, the clip ends with the words "coming soon ... ish." Hmm.

"It's a variant of the show that's more in keeping with the original," said Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat. He added that the Christmas special will be both broadcast on TV and screened in select movie theatres. He said he hasn't begun writing the show's fourth season but has a rough idea of what twists and turns he'll incorporate. Or as he put it, "It will sucker punch you into emotional devastation."
