As Independence Day approaches, millions across the country are readying to display the National Flag at their homes and offices. However, pride must come with responsibility. But after the celebrations conclude, it’s vital to know how to store and in case it’s damaged then dispose off the Tiranga properly while preserving its dignity. Here’s how:

Do’s and Don’ts of Displaying the Flag

Placement: The saffron band must always be on top horizontally. When displayed vertically, saffron must be to the flag’s right (the left of a person facing it).

Day & Night: Following Flag Code amendments, citizens can fly the flag day and night at home, provided it stays well-kept.

No Touch Rule: The flag must never touch the floor, ground, or water, nor be used as drapery or attire.

No Bunting: It should never be used as decoration, festoons, or rosettes.

Storage, Disposal, and MCD Collection Centres

Folding & Storing: Lower the flag gently without touching the ground. Fold it systematically — saffron and green strips inward under the white strip, then white inward from the sides so only the Ashoka Chakra is visible. Store it in a clean box.

Disposing: Never throw the flag in a dustbin. If damaged, the Flag Code mandates it be destroyed as a whole in private via respectful burning or burial.
