A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to former Union minister Jairam Ramesh in the defamation case filed by Vivek Doval, the son of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Ramesh appeared before additional chief metropolitan magistrate Samar Vishal in connection with the case filed against him, the editor and a reporter of Caravan magazine.
The Congress leader was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 20,000. Paresh Nath, the editor in-chief of Caravan and reporter Kaushal Shroff were granted bail by the court on April 25. Ramesh and the other co-accused pleaded not guilty before the court.
Vivek Doval, an overseas citizen of India and a UK national, moved the court against Ramesh and the Caravan regarding an article published in the magazine on January 16 linking hedge funds controlled by Vivek Doval and the government’s November 2016 demonetization. In his complaint, Vivek Doval said the magazine and Ramesh, who held a press conference repeating the allegations levelled by the magazine, had attempted to “deliberately malign and defame” him to “settle scores with his father”.
While claiming trial, Ramesh said the press conference was non-defamatory and based on facts in the public domain.
