Dadri lynching accused dies of ‘chikungunya or dengue’ in Delhi hospital

An accused in the Dadri lynching case died in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday evening due to suspected chikungunya. Ravin Sisodiya, alias Robin, 22, was arrested on charges of murder and assault and was lodged in the Greater Noida jail for the past one year.

Ravin and 17 other youths, including three juveniles, were arrested for allegedly lynching Mohammad Ikhlaq, 55, and grievously injuring his son Danish over allegations of slaughtering a cow and storing its meat for consumption on September 28, 2015.

“The patient was referred to Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi, from the district hospital in Noida. He had chronic kidney disease and diabetes. He also had respiratory infection and fever,” said Dr JC Passey, medical director of Lok Nayak Hospital.

The patient died of kidney and respiratory failure, he said. The samples were sent for tests, reports of which are still awaited.

However, his family alleged that he was not well for the past four days but the jail administration did not take provide timely medical help.

“However, instead of admitting him to the hospital, the police took him back to jail and gave him medicines. On Tuesday evening his health deteriorated and he was rushed to Delhi, where he died,” Singh said.

Dharmendra Singh, senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar, said: “We have received information about his death due to some mosquito-borne disease. Final medical reports are awaited.”

The jail authorities did not respond to repeated calls and messages. Meanwhile, the villagers at Bisada threatened a stir, claiming Ravin died due to negligence.

“My son died. What else I have to say. He was in jail since last one year because somebody named him in the FIR. Is this justice?” said Ranveer Sisodiya, Ravin’s father.
