Dakshina Kannada police raided a prayer hall based on a complaint by a right-wing outfit that forced conversation was taking place at the centre, only to realise that it was a rehabilitation centre, officials said on Monday.
An official in the police department said that Uppinangady police raided the Moriya prayer centre at Arla near Konalu of Nellyadi town.
The raid was based on input from a right-wing organisation that 27 people from Shivamogga district were kept at the centre for religious conversion. When the police raided the prayer centre, they found 27 people, including 18 were women and a six-year-old boy. However, they claimed they had come to the centre on their own, the official said.
During the interrogation, the people said that they are from Shivamogga, and some of them are alcohol addicts and have come only to get cured of their disorders.
“They claimed that they heard about the centre on YouTube and the ad claimed that their health will improve through prayers so that they came to the prayer centre by bus at their own cost and no one has forced them to attend the prayers,” said a senior police officer.
The authorities of the prayer hall have not sort any action against the right-wing organisation, a police official said.
