DMK president M Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery hospital in Chennai’s Alwarpet on Thursday.
Karunanidhi was rushed to the hospital around 5.50 am for the “optimisation of nutrition and hydration” that is given to undernourished people who cannot maintain a healthy body weight by meals alone.
He was accompanied by his wife Rajathiammal, son MK Stalin and former union minister Dayanidhi Maran.
Among people such as Karunanidhi who don’t face food shortages, undernutrition is usually caused by an illness --- like severe infection, diseases of the stomach and gut, cancers, etc -- that can affect appetite and hamper nutrient absorption.
Along with IV-fluid to restore electrolyte balance, Karunanidhi is likely to be given oral nutritional supplements between planned nutritive meals as a top-up food to help him gain wait.
