The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the government on a petition seeking a ban on dramatisation, commercial exploitation or misuse of the national anthem.
A bench comprising of justices Dipak Misra and Amita Roy responded to a petition filed in public interest by Shyam Naryan Chouskey who also urged that national anthem should be compulsorily played at all cinema theatres across the country before the commencement of a movie.
Chouskey alleged that the anthem was being played in variety shows to add drama. He said that not only was it an insult to the anthem, but was also an violation of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
He suggested that there should be no commercial exploitation of the national anthem nor should it be allowed to be dramatised.
There should be no interruption in between till the completion of national anthem and no abridged version of National Anthem shall be sung at any point of time, he said.
