UP govt resolves Russian woman’s Agra property dispute after Sushma’s request

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj sought the help of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday in a case involving a Russian woman, who alleged abuse by her in-laws in Agra.

A Russian woman who alleged abuse by her in-laws in Agra over a property dispute was “united” with the family on Sunday after the intervention of external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

First, it was Swaraj who sought Yadav’s help. Soon after her tweet, Agra police stepped in to resolve the matter.

Olga Efimenkova was protesting outside the house of her mother-in-law, demanding her husband’s share in the property.

Swaraj thanked Yadav in another tweet that said: “Thank you Akhilesh ji for resolving this. Such incidents affect country’s image,” she posted.

Olga married Vikrant Singh Chandel in 2011 and they have a son. The couple had been residing in Goa, but after suffering losses in business they returned to Agra.

However, when the couple reached their house, they were not allowed entry as Vikrant’s mother, Nirmala Chandel, had gifted the property to her daughter who runs a school there.

“Policemen from New Agra police station reached here today and interacted with us. They have suggested that we can live in the portion rented out to tenants by my mother-in-law,” Olga said.

A case was registered on Olga’s complaint against Chandel and three others, said AK Singh, the in-charge of New Agra police station.

“It is basically a family dispute and we are interacting with family members and hope to resolve the matter soon,” Singh said.
