Bastar superintendent of police (SP) Ratanlal Dangi told Hindustan Times that troopers were sent to two areas after they received intelligence inputs on Maoist movements.

"Most of them were arrested from their homes. During the last couple of years these areas could not be accessed by the forces for any operation, so the guerrillas might have assumed the place was a safe haven for them," said Dangi, who had received a threat letter from Maoists last month.

The SP is facing the ire of Maoists because he recently launched a successful drive against the rebels in his district, about 325 km south of Raipur.

Rewards of Rs 3,000-5,000 had been announced for their arrest and the court had issued warrants against them. They were produced before the court and sent to jail.

The rebels were involved in looting and damaging government properties and had launched attacks in interior areas over the past three years, the SP said.
