Rajat Suri, a 24-year-old MIT dropout of Indian origin, has created a tablet waiter that lets diners take control of their restaurant experience. The tablet, called Presto, allows customers to browse restaurant menu, look at pictures of the fare on offer and order without having to wave down a waiter. Suri’s company — E la carte — has 300 restaurants on its list of clients now, including Calafia Cafe, a restaurant in Palo Alto in California owned by Charlie Ayers, chef once upon a time to the Grateful Dead. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was a frequent his restaurant.
