Communist rebels attacked a police post in southeast Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least nine policemen and wounding 22 others, officials said.

The rebels came in a bus and attacked the police station at Birtamod, about 500 kilometers southeast of Kathmandu, said Bhola Siwakoti, the chief government official in the area.

In the fighting that followed, three rebels were killed, local police chief Keshari Ghimire said.
