Minakshi Gutlikar succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday morning at R.N. Cooper Hospital.

On Monday around 10.30 pm, after dinner, Minakshi asked her daughter, a Class 4 student, to study for her next day’s exam, the police said.

But when the girl turned a deaf ear to her mother’s request, Minakshi got angry. “In a fit of rage, the woman poured the kerosene from the stove on herself and lit a matchstick,” said Senior Inspector Suresh Nalavde, of the Versova police station.

Her husband Vishwanath, who was sleeping with their three-year-old son, heard her screams and rushed to douse the flames.

Vishwanath, who works as a peon in a State Bank of India branch, suffered burns on his hands while saving his wife.

In her statement to the police on Monday night, Minakshi claimed that she was tired of repeatedly asking her daughter to study.

The Gutlikars are residents of D’Souza Wadi at Yari Road in Versova.
