West Bengal chief minister announced on Monday evening that Abhijit Chakrabarti, vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University has resigned from his post.

The announcement was greeted with wild cheers by the agitating students hundreds of whom thronged the campus where the announcement was made.

"The vice chancellor has resigned. Let there be peace in the campus now," said the chief minister before leaving the campus.

While Banerjee was meeting the university officials, the VC sent a text message to education minister Partha Chatterjee saying that he has resigned.

The Jadavpur University has been witnessing protests since September over the alleged molestation of a student by seniors and Chakrabarti's refusal to resign. Students surrounded Chakrabarti's office in the campus after which he called the police citing threat to his life. The police forcibly removed the students, allegedly dragging them and beating them. Some students were injured in the late night clash.

Chakrabarti dug in his heels in the face of growing opposition. Students united like never before organising rallies in the city and even holding an unprecedented referendum in the campus.
