On a day when all eyes were on whether Narendra Modi’s role for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls would be made clear, the BJP passed a resolution hitting out at the UPA government over internal and external security lapses.

Former Union minister Murli Manohar Joshi moved the resolution before lunch, and it was passed after a discussion later in the day.

"The Congress-led UPA II is completing its tenure placing at high risk our internal and external security. Our national stature and prestige is badly eroded," the resolution said.

Briefing media persons, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said that the party expressed its concern over the Maoist threat, charging the government with confusion and "laid-back" approach.

"It is an issue affecting many states and not just one, and has been badly handled by the UPA. The Congress favours those legitmising Maoism in the name of human rights. Now they are blaming the Chhattisgarh government for the recent atttacks, with some of them even alleging conspiracy," she said, defending the Raman Singh government’s record on Maoism.

The party also accused the UPA bgovernment of being soft on Pakistan, recalling the fatal attack on Sarabjit Singh, dismemberment of Indian soldiers’ bodies and the Mumbai terror attack.

It also recalled how Italian marines being tried for killing Indian fishermen were allowed to go home for Christmas and voting. The party also saw the recent Chinese incursions as a proof that the nation’s foreign policy was adrift under the UPA.
