CBI files chargesheet against Jaya Jaitley

The CBI charged ex-SP president Jaya Jaitley for allegedly receiving money in a Tehelka's 'Operation West End.'

After probing the Tehelka expose for two years, the CBI on Wednesday, chargesheeted three persons, including former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley, for allegedly receiving Rs two lakh from fictitious representatives of an arms firm to influence defence deals.

The CBI filed its chargehseet against Jaitly, Major General (retired) SP Murugai and Gopal Pacherwal, a leader of the now defunct Samata Party, before a Special Judge under relevant provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The agency accused Jaitley of taking a bribe of Rs two lakh from Tehelka representatives posing as arms dealers as a motive for exercising personal influence on Defence Ministry officials for showing favour to the fictitious company West End International to get an order for supplying hand-held thermal imagers.

Murugai was charged with allegedly receiving Rs 1.2 lakh for arranging the meeting of the Tehelka representatives with Jaitley and demanding another Rs five lakh from them for getting an evaluation letter issued from the Defence Ministry in respect of the purported product of West End.
