In the past, many people have complained of inconvenience caused while lodging a cyber crime complaint, as the officials would direct them towards the local police, who would in turn ask them to approach the cyber cell.

The Mumbai police commissioner, too, had confessed to asking local police to register cyber crime complaints, as the lone cell at the Bandra-Kurla Complex was short-staffed.

“The new police station will divide our workload. Reduction in the number of cases will help us concentrate on the investigation better,” said an official from the cyber cell requesting anonymity.

According to the complainants HT spoke to, the cyber police would direct people to the local police station if the amount was less than Rs2 lakh.

While an officer from the cyber cell denied having any monetary limit, he claimed that staff shortage and legal limitations hampered their productivity. Under the Information Technology (IT) Act — under which cyber crimes are registered — only an officer of the rank of a police inspector can investigate the cases.
