Their abstinence was meant to be a counterweight to chief minister Modi's three-day fast, which ended on Monday evening.

"We have exposed the government, which is corrupt and enacted this political stunt to divert the attention from burning issues like non-appointment of the lokayukta, corruption at all levels of the administration, and favours granted to industrial groups," Vaghela said.

Congress leaders fasted on the pavement outside the Mahatma Gandhi ashram, unlike Modi, who stayed in an air-conditioned convention hall where people were brought in state transport buses from rural areas, Vaghela said.

"Those who came to Modi's fast came for a weekend picnic to Ahmedabad because they were transported and were provided free food," he said.

The Congress would continue its fight to expose the "misdeeds" of the government, Vaghela added.
