The Central Water Commission’s latest report on status of major dams in India says water in Uttarakhand dams is 449% above normal levels, highest for any state in the country.

The commission monitors two dams in the state — Tehri and Ramganga — both of which received heavy flow of water because of incessant rainfall on June 14-16.

The weather department has predicted severe rainfall in the state on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The CWC also says as the water level in the dams is expected to increase with more rainfall, the gates will have to be opened to discharge excess water and it could result in flooding downstream areas.

While the danger in Uttarakhand is higher, the CWC report shows the water levels in many other dams in northern India to be high.

The heavy rain predicted for the next few days may cause flooding in some northern Indian parts, an official said.
