Ramkrishna Sarkar, a house staff of Bankura Sammilani Medical College, has been booked for rape and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

The 18-year-old girl, a resident of Saltora area of Bankura, had been admitted in the hospital on Monday.

That night, the doctor took her to another room for medical examination. No female nurse was present during the "examination" and the patient's mother was asked to wait outside.

"The doctor had told me to leave the room as my presence would create problems in check-up," the girl's mother said.

"I waited outside for about two hours and when my daughter did not come out, I entered the room. She told me in gestures what had happened."

The family lodged a complaint on Tuesday.

"The accused was arrested after the assault was confirmed," said district superintendent of police Pranav Kumar.

Following the incident, the hospital superintendent has been asked to go on leave, said hospital sources. A 3-member committee formed by the hospital is probing the charges.
