Dominic Asquith, the great-grandson of former UK prime minister HH Asquith and a Middle East expert who held ambassadorial posts in Iraq, Egypt and Libya, has been appointed the next British high commissioner to India.
Asquith, 59, succeeds James Bevan, who was transferred to a non-governmental public body, the foreign office announced on Tuesday.
Knighted in 2012, Asquith worked as a freelance journalist in Amman in the early 1980s, besides holding several senior diplomatic assignments in various countries.
He is scheduled to take up the appointment in New Delhi later this month with his wife and four children.
The Foreign Office said: “The Honourable Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of India in succession to Sir James Bevan KCMG, who has been transferred to a non-governmental public body. The Honourable Sir Dominic will take up his appointment during March 2016”.
