Mishra explained about the symptoms in young ones, precautions and treatment, at a press conference as part of the pediatric eye safety month, in association with medicine giant Cilpa Ltd, here on Tuesday.

Dr Mishra said that the parents must take proper care of the eyes of the new born baby and must immediately consult a doctor in case of any abnormality. He said if the newborn baby has red eye, or excess watering or discharge from the eye, then the parents must consult the ophthalmologist at the earliest because delay could lead to more complications and permanent blindness.

If overlooked, it may result in chronic discharge from the eye which can only be cured by surgical procedure after the age of 5 - 6 years.

Dr Mishra suggested that vision testing of school going child should be done regularly.
