He was 64.

Mawlong was suffering from renal failure and was on dialysis for several months, sources said.

He was United Democratic Party's MLA from Umroi constituency and served as a chief minister of Meghalaya between September 2000 and December 2001.

Mawlong was also ousted from power after alliance partners BJP and NCP pulled out following a scandal over the construction of the Meghalaya House in Kolkata.

However, the Guwahati High Court later cleared his name from the scandal.

Mawlong is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters.
