Earlier on the day, a local court had convicted all four final year students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Tanda in the 2009 ragging case, which led to the death of first year medical student Aman Satya Kachroo. The four were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Judge Purender Vaidya, after completing the final hearing in the case on October 30, had reserved judgment for November 11.

Special public prosecutor, Jiwan Lal Sharma argued that Kachroo was brutally beaten up under the garb of ragging by his four seniors - Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma - and succumbed to his injuries. However the defence maintained that Kachroo suffered from heart ailment.

Additional district and sessions judge Purinder Vaidya held the students guilty under sections 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.

Reacting to the judgement, Aman Kachroo's father Rajendra Kachroo said he is dissapointed with the quantum of punishment..

Kachroo's death had led to national uproar. The state government constituted a magisterial probe to ascertain the reason behind his death. The probe held Dr Suresh Sankhyan, principal Dr RPMC College responsible for increase in ragging incidents in the college. Sankhyan was suspended after the ragging incident.

The Dharamsala fast track court, on July 17 had granted bail to the four accused. The High Court, taking suo moto notice of media reports, had cancelled the bail and asked all the four to surrender before the court.
