On September 22, 2002, two Pakistan-backed terrorists had attacked the sprawling temple of the Swaminarayan sect in the state capital. They held devotees and a large number of tourists from across the nation hostage for hours before a team of the National Security Guards (NSG) flushed them out in an overnight operation.
The terror attack had claimed 46 lives, including those of the two attackers.
