Thousands of Delhi-bound passengers were stranded on Saturday with Haryana Roadways staff refusing to ply buses in Delhi and instead dropping the passengers on Delhi border points. The decision of not entering Delhi for a day was taken by the Haryana Roadways Karamchari Sanyukat Sanghasrh Samiti (HRKSSS), in protest against the alleged high-handedness and unfair challans by Delhi traffic police.
The protest was planned after talks on Thursday and Friday between unions and senior police officers of Delhi and Haryana failed.
The HRKSSS members demanded a check on the alleged unfair challaning by Delhi traffic police. They also claimed that the traffic police staff sought free trips while travelling in Haryana and when the bus staff insists on a ticket, they misbehave with them.In November 2011, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the traffic police had a similar tiff. The Delhi traffic police had started a special drive to check violations by DTC buses, allegedly in retaliation to the DTC staff refusing free rides to policemen.
A senior leader of HRKSSS said it had become difficult for roadways bus conductors to comply with the demands of the cops, who slap the conductors with hefty fines if asked for tickets.
“Around 1,000 buses from 24 depots and 13 sub-depots in the state, which travel to Delhi from the state daily, did not enter Delhi on Saturday and dropped passengers at border points,” said Dharmbir Hooda, HRKSSS spokesperson.
