Hindustan Times had reported on Monday that the two girls from a remote village in Nanded district had finished fourth and fifth in the half marathon. But since they could not afford to buy the electronic-timing chip, which was mandatory for being eligible for the cash award, they had to forego the prize money.

Had the girls bought the chips, which were prized at Rs 200 each, they would have gone home with a collective prize money of $900 (approx Rs 45,000).

Party president Kapil Patil told HT on Monday that he would reward the girls with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each and would buy them equipment for gear with the remaining amount. "Our general secretary of the region, Sham Nilangekar, would hand over Rs 5,000 each to them tomorrow.
