Accusing the state government of converting Jammu and Kashmir into a 'police state', the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday said it was giving a free hand to the security forces in contravening law and human values.

Since Ghulam Nabi Azad has taken over as Chief Minister, the security forces have been given a free hand to do whatever they want in contravening law and human values, a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday.

Claims of "zero tolerance" (for human rights violations) are being made inside and outside the Assembly but violations continue, he said. It is evident from the fact that forces have been given liberty to convert Kashmir virtually into an army camp or police state, the spokesman alleged.

He charged that the person killed by the CRPF at Dal gate on Wednesday was part of a "revenge policy of the force."

After two CRPF personnel were shot dead last week, the commandant of the concerned unit had allegedly threatened people that the killings will be avenged and that they did, he accused.

Condemning the killing of the youth, Hurriyat urged the people to rise against such "brutalities" as it is "better to die a dignified death than live an undignified life."
